My car's speedometer is not moving at all, it is stuck at 0km/h and the odometer is not counting. The hand brake light is on and not switching off even if i lower the hand brake down. What is the possible cause? Thanks

Welcome to 2CarPros.

I have to be honest, this vehicle isn't offered in the US, so my technical info is extremely limited. However, can you tell me if the ABS, traction control, or any other lights are on?

I ask because there could be a couple things happening. First, there is a simple switch on the parking brake assembly that is either on or off. If it has failed, that could cause the light to stay on.

On the other hand, the speedometer issues would not be related to that switch. However, a vehicle speed sensor that sends a signal to the computer and then the speedometer is my first suspect. If (and this is where my technical info is needed) the speedometer depends on a wheel speed sensor, that could be causing both issues. If it is one on the transmission (output speed sensor), chances are you have two different issues.

If you could, let me know if both issues happened at the same time.

Take care,
Joe

Hi Joe.

Thanks for the response. Yes, the ABS light is on and i have realized the there was a broken cable on the front right wheel and i fixed that. I also removed the VSS sensor and connected it to a volt meter, and this kind of VSS has no rotating part it has a magnetic tip. I placed a metal (ferrous) object and i could see some sort of voltage output when you measure across the two terminals of the sensor. I could not test the car since i had to rush somewhere. Is it possible that the wheel speed sensor can cause the speedometer and the odometer not to work?

Hi:

It is possible. The sensor you mentioned with the magnet is called a hall effect sensor. The magnet creates an electrical current as a tone wheel passes by it. That current changes with speed and that is what controls either the ABS or speedometer. Now, on some vehicles a wheel speed sensor is used and others have an output speed sensor on the transmission.

I'm not sure what you replaced. Let me know

Hi Tom,

We would be happy to help you, but I need to ask a favor. I need you to copy and paste your questions to a new thread. We try to keep the threads specific to the same type of vehicle.

Here is the link to start a new one:
