Hi,

Please see the attached procedure for how to test a malfunctioning speedometer. This should walk you through to the route cause.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need more information. Thanks

Hello,

The VSS is located down on the transmission near the axles. Here is a diagram that will show you where it is (below)

DTC P0500: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT

Circuit Description

Wheel speed sensors on each wheel deliver an input signal to Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU). ABS ECU converts input signals from wheel speed sensors to a 4-pulse input signal to the instrument cluster. Instrument cluster then converts 4-pulse input signal to a rectangular waveform and then sends vehicle speed signal to ECM. On models with Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), ABS ECU may also be referred to as VSC ECU. On models without VSC, ABS ECU may also be referred to as ABS actuator and ECU. DTC is set if there is no vehicle speed signal to ECM while vehicle is being driven. Possible causes are:

Vehicle speed circuit is open or shorted between instrument cluster and ECM.

Defective instrument cluster.

Defective ECM.

Check out the diagrams (Below)

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken

I replaced the vss and still the same problem. I have tried to look at various manuals to follow the wiring but with difficulty. Not one that shows the whole picture of the speedometer function. I have wanted to follow the wires to find a loose connector but can not find the connections or grounds as they are covered over behind the dash. Any suggestions

My van (1999) with 85,000 miles has an odd problem. Only on long trips the speedometer and odometer both suddenly go out and the check engine light goes on. After about a half hour of continued running the speedometer and odometer come back on and the engine light goes out. This has happened about five times. The cruise control is the only other thing affected. It too shuts off. Otherwise the car continues to drive just fine. Any ideas?
Thanks!

When the check engine light comes on a trouble code is stored in you vehicles PCM (computer). Visit this guide.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Return with the trouble code(s) and we'll proceed from there.

Please include the alpha-numeric trouble code,. Example- P0300, P0420, etc. and not the clerks interpretation of the code (their interpretation can be misleading or completely wrong).

This car does not use a VSS it takes the info from the ABS system. I would check the fuses first. Fuses in the diagrams below (gauge fuse 10 amp)

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Good answer Jessee. There is another problem I have encountered in those vans and that is the ground to the cluster. Check the ground from the battery to the chassis and from battery to the engine. Remove and clean them. The cluster ground is a black wire with a white stripe. Sometimes you can see it on the left side of the passenger compartment screwed into the chassis.

Let me know.

My Toyota Sienna speedometer and odometer quit working, one computer said it was a speed sensor and it wouldn't mention which one of the four, I hooked up to an older computer and it said it was speed sensor "A", I've researched and cannot find out which one is A, front left? Thank you.
