Welcome to 2CarPros.
Just to confirm, is it a 4 cylinder? The 2.2L wasn't used in this car, so the attached info will be for the 2.4L. I just don't want to give you bad info.
As far as the problem, have you inspected the wiring and the connector? I am going to provide the directions for VSS replacement. I need you to confirm this is what was done and take a look to see if anything was done differently.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the O-ring onto the VSS.
2. Install the output VSS into the transmission case.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.
3. Install the VSS stud.
Tighten the stud to 11 N.M (8 lb ft).
4. Install the VSS electrical harness retainer to the VSS stud.
5. Connect the VSS electrical connector.
6. Lower the vehicle.
If everything is correct, can you provide the code you are getting so I can identify possible causes?
It could even be related to the reluctor wheel in the transmission. I attached a pic of it for you to see. (PIC 3)
Let me know.
Take care,
Joe
