I replaced the speed sensor and the wouldn't start so i removed the sensor and it was damaged. What would cause this?

A damaged speed sensor is normally caused by it not being installed at the correct depth. Meaning the sensor end is too far into the housing and the tone wheel makes contact with it as it turns. This could be caused by the incorrect sensor, not using a spacer when needed, or the tone wheel has debris on it which damages the sensor.
Also, the housing could be distorted or damaged, this was common on GM products where the steering knuckle will actually be the issue.
Which sensor did you replace? The input speed sensor?
