While driving the car stopped picking up speed?

I was driving down the street and all of a sudden, my car stopped picking up speed, no matter how much I press the gas to the floor it still won't pull itself. It isn't making any noise, it's really quiet. When I try pressing the gas to the floor it won't pick up speed.

Hi,

Does the engine continue to run? Also, was the check engine light staying on when the engine was running?

Let me know as much as you can. Also, let me know if you have a scan tool that can be used to retrieve codes, if there were any odd odors, or noises when this happened.
