Hi,
The EGR does have an electrical connector, so it's possible. However, I would think you would see at least a small amount of smoke.
If you look at pic 1 below, I circled a part on the EGR that gets extremely hot. Make sure nothing is touching it.
IF you decide to replace it, here are the directions. It really isn't too hard of a job. The remaining pics correlate with the directions.

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) VALVE
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Turn OFF the ignition.

2. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve electrical connector.
3. Remove the bolt retaining the pipe assembly from the EGR valve and carefully pull the pipe assembly back.
4. Remove the EGR valve retaining bolts.
5. Remove EGR valve assembly.
6. Remove the gasket.
7. Clean the EGR valve mounting surface.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1. Install the EGR valve with a new gasket to the intake manifold.
2. Install the bolts through the EGR valve.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 30 N.M (22 lb ft).
3. Connect the pipe assembly to the EGR valve.
4. Install the bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N.M (18 lb ft).
5. Connect the EGR valve electrical connector.
