If a fan clutch goes out will it cause it to smell hot even though the temperature gauge does not show to be hot?

Check the fluid, when cold and add more. There may be a vapor lock. The gauge shows the temperature of the fluid moving around it. Let run a few minutes then shut it off. This way if there is a vapor lock the coolant would circulate. Make sure being careful after it cools and when you take the cap off it will be hot. Check belts. The smell will probably be the antifreeze or coolant to boil.
