What could be the problem. The car is running fine

You need to have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic computer to locate the fault codes. This will tell you why the light is on

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Have got car checked by computer. Workshop says it is a EGR fault.
What are the possible dangers of not changing the EGR unit?

To start with excess fuel consumption, catalytic convertor damage, the vehicle will eventually start to run roughly uless the fault is rectified. All sytems have to be working correctly to pass the MOT. Wil fail the test if not !
