how do I get the ignition switch off from the barrel. Iv looked and cant see any srews bolts etc?

There is a lockpin underneath that you push in while turning the key in barrel !

Audi / Volkswagen / Skoda Steering Lock tends to give trouble with time. The problem is due to faulty mechanism of stearing lock which ensures that only single self (starter) is available on each key rotation. This system prevents the damage to starter motor by ensuring that you can't start the car again until you have completely turned-off the ignition of car.

Either with time or by accidently trying to start the car when it is in running mode, this mechanism may get damage and its parts ensuring this mechanism can break inside the lock. You can remove the broken part so that lock can be used again
