Single mom DESPERATLY needs to get car fixed

I was driving my car on the highway, my car started to over heat (so just as i go to pull over (my steering wheel gets stiff) but i still manage to pull over to the shoulder. i turn my car off and let it cool. then put antifreeze in it. i try to turn my car on and it wont start. it made the (errh errrh errrrr sound as i was trying to start then after a bit it quit doing that) i had to get a tow home. i took my battery to a auto store had them charge my battery and test it and my battery is good. but my car still wont start... what could it be? (There is NO Water in the oil -- I checked for that) -- also (the reservoir where I put the antifreeze it smells of gas)
