Shimming in the steering

I have had my shares if replacing rotors and brakes as well as other suspension parts. Bought this one and there was shimming in the steering but I was sure it isn't just the rotors, replaced rotors and brakes the shimming is now less but still there, felt more at the brake pedal than the steering, what else can cause such shake? Tires almost new. When I raised the wheels there was no 3 and 9 or 12 and 6 play.

I also greased the pins, drive it and held the parking brake up while driving and without pressing the brakes and felt no shimming, also the rear brakes have good thickness

Have you cleaned the hub surface when putting the new rotors on? If you don't then it can create run out which will be felt as a shimmy.

If you look at the pictures below you will see a corroded hub surface and then a new one. Clearly the surface will not look like new but it needs to be cleaned to ensure it is bear metal and no rust build up.

I cleaned the hubs and greased the pins, brake pads and where the brakes sit, helped somewhat, there is this hesitation that I am never able to figure out on any car that has this issue. It goes like this: imagine you are very close to stopping at a light, you apply brakes at a steady force, it feels as it hesitates before it comes to a close stop, as if someone is holding the wheel for 1/2 second and letting go and holding again and letting go or as if the brakes hold for 1/2 and let go for 1/2 second, giving it that jumping feeling as if you are doing 3 mph and then 5 and then 3 and then 5 mph before it stops.

This sounds like the ABS is activating. Do you hear a grinding type noise and feel the vibration in the pedal?

We need to inspect the wheel speed sensor connections and the tone wheels for cracks. Do you have a scan tool that can look at wheel speeds inputs to the ABS? If so, we need to monitor them which driving and see if they are all the same speeds.

I feel the vibration in the pedal but no grinding noise or ABS activity or dash lights, could be bad rotors? They are eBay aftermarket. So I called them and they sending another set, this hesitation I am talking about I feel it in many cars, could a bent axle do this? I will check ABS codes and speeds.

I just replaced the power steering pump on this one, lost one of the mounting bolts (she has 3 bolts that mount the pump to the engine) is there a way you can find out what size it is? I know it's a 10 mm, but need the size so I can maybe go to Lowes or Home Depot and find one.

It could be rotors. Good thing they are sending another set. Let us know what happens.

As for the bolt, unfortunately we don't have the detail on the bolt sizes. The best thing to do is remove one and you will have one to compare it to.

After replacing the power steering pump the noise has gotten better, but there is still some whining going on whenever I turn it. Belt just replaced as well. What else could it be?

Does it only make this noise when turning the wheel? Does it do it sitting still turning the wheel back and forth or do you have to be moving? Is it loud enough to get a recording of it?

After I finished I added new fluid, bled it right and left until it has gotten better and some of the air was out. But I noticed it turning right and left while sitting still, not as bad but still.

I was trying to get a shot of the fluid but it was dark, but I turned the steering about ten tiles right and left hopefully that will help get rid of any trapped air. I will drive it again tomorrow, but not sure if the whining sound is obvious to you or am just too picky.

I can understand but that doesn't sound too bad to me. I have seen a lot of these Mazda's and Ford's that sound like that. So while it is a bit noisy, it does sound like something I would replace the pump for until it either got worse or the pump failed. Clearly any air in the system will make this worse so working the air out is a good idea.
