Vehicle stops accelerating and just revs. I can use second gear to get it moving, but every time I put it in drive it doesn't shift into gear unless I step heavy on the pedal, and then it drops back out and revs.

It sounds like the transmission is low on fluid.

Here is a guide to help you check the level:

If the fluid level is okay, I would run the codes because it sounds like the input shaft sensor needs to be replaced. To be sure let's run the codes to see what comes up.

Can I ask if the speedometer is working? If not, I would replace the VSS sensor. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

The speedometer still works. I am still able to shift into reverse, and from 2 to 1 and back again. The emergency brake light started coming on and off sporadically (while driving. E-brake is not engaged) at the same time the issue started. I don't know if that's a separate issue, or a side effect of what happening with the transmission.

That could be did any codes come up. You can get a CAN scanner (Controller Area Network) which will work on most cars from Amazon.

here is a video to show you how:

Please go over these guides and get back to us.
