A month ago this light came on (the car seemed to work OK) and went out a week later, shortly after I replaced the gas cap.
I replaced the AC compressor last week and the air conditioner started working, but after about 5 miles the "Service engine soon" light came back on and a few miles after that, the engine started missing, no backfire, but jerky engine power. I turned the AC off and the lite stayed on but soon the engine smoothed out and the car has worked OK for about a week now, but I have not turned the AC back on. The lite is still on.
I scanned the car - Code PO440, CNF Mode 10 Evap Emissions.

You only have the code P0440?Suprised there are no missfire codes but maybe your scan tool cant read the history codes.

If I take it to a Pep Boys, should I expect that their scanner would do a better job?
Dou you think the recent AC replacement is the culpret?

Not unless you knocked something loose when you did the compressor or the compressor is locking up seen that cause them to die but not set that code. Depends on what type of scan tool pep boys has butthat wouldnt be my first choice to take it.
