Service engine soon light on

My check engine light came on mechanic said code showed thermostat might be stuck open car temp gauage never showed it over heating he said temp showed 170dreeges does this sound like this could be the problem?

What was the diagnostic fault code number or description? If he got that temperature with a scanner that displays live data, how long was the engine running? How hot is the air from the heater? If you have a temperature gauge on the dash, does it read like it normally does?
