Upon start up on occasion, my car's steering is difficult. After the first little turn out of my parking spot, the steering is fine going down the road. No issues whatsoever even after other startups. It seems the temp dial on my heating/ac accessory is difficult to turn too at the same time the steering is difficult, but also becomes fine down the road. Also, during cold weather, something around the front of the engine squeals for the first few miles and stops squealing. It doesn't squeal at all during the warmer months. A gearhead friend of mine said the serpentine belt looks really good and has a lot of life left. Could a bad tensioner cause all these symptoms?

I took it to the dealer and they "recommend" replacing the alternator and A/C compressor belt(s). I don't trust either dealer near me because they've both been caught trying to do unnecessary work to fix problems.

Hello,

This is usually the sign of a bad belt or a bearing in the pulley of the component that the belt is driving. In the diagrams down below I have included instructions from the vehicle manufacturer on how to inspect both drive belts on your vehicle without a belt tensioner tool. I have also included a few links below for you to go to.

Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you are able to find out.

We were handed more evidence today that probably pinpointed the problem. The battery and brake lights lit up during a drive. I noticed the car is a tad slower to start after a new battery last month. Do you think think this indicates a bearing in the alternator tensioner/pulley/whatever isn't allowing the alternator to charge the battery and the source of the brief squeal during cold weather?

Hello again,

Sure. It is a pulley being driven by the serpentine belt with a bearing in the pulley. See if the pulley has any play in it. If it does then it is bad and needs to be replaced.

Thanks,
Alex
