Sensor on transmission

On my 4+3 transmission (from front to back) there is a sensor underneath the second shifter rod,what is that for?Also,some times my speedometer works and sometimes it doesn't (digital). what causes this?

Good evening,

The switch by the shifter is the overdrive switch and the speedometer sensor is at the rear. The speed sensor is the most common cause for the speedometer issue.
