Okay, I put in battery and the car starts then shuts off, starts again then shuts off. It does it one more time and shuts down and will not do anything. I heard about using an auto-start box to bypass it, but when I dig deeper under the steering column I found one already there and a second box with a key in it that does not match my ignition. This is a used car I bought. My key fob does nothing and I put new batteries in it.

That sounds like they installed a remote start and used a key that was not cut to your car. About the only way to proceed will be to remove the remote start mess, then install a new ignition switch and cylinder. That will restore the system so it all works.
