the check engine light is on, how do I reset the light?

If the issue that was causing the light to come on has been repaired, then we can clear this using a scan tool.
However, if it has not then we need to start with checking the codes.

Then when the codes have been repaired, we can clear the codes.

Other ways to clear codes are to disconnect the battery and touch the cables together. However, this is going to erase the active memory and you will fail any emissions or state inspections due to the OBD monitor information having been erased and will have to be relearned.
