I have a 06 VUE that needs new pads. I read instructions on the net that say I need to open the pressure valve when I compress the piston back in place. Others say I need to unplug some electrical connections for the ABS. Both say I could damage my ABS system to the tune of $1000 or more

Is there any prep to the system I need to do in addition to the actual brake repair process?

I hear this all the time "Urban Mith" brake system is as ahy other for repair. With no special tools or proceedure needed to do pad, caliper line etc replacement. The ABS is only activated in severe braking conditions.
