The battery went dead and when we jumpstarted it the the speedometer failed to work and the Service Engine Light came on.

You'll have to get the check engine light diagnosed and see what code is in there. It could be a speed sensor issue or a trans computer concern. Can't explain the why...but if you get me a code I can explain the repair.
