I have a 2000 Saturn SL2 and recently in stop and go traffic we saw steam coming from under the passenger side of the hood and saw it coming from the coolant cap on the expansion tank and the temp gauge was about halfway (it is ALWAYS at 1/4 when driving/stopped).
I changed the bottle and cap with new OEM parts, still having the same problem, so I changed the Thermostat and temp sensor (brass tipped) and the temp gauge is still going up. I also swapped the relay with the horn relay since they are the same # and the horn still works using the fan relay.
The cooling fan only comes on with the AC on, when switched off the fan turns off. I haven't let it go above 1/2 way on the temp gauge since I am afraid to do so. For the 6 years I have owned this vehicle the gauge has NEVER gone over 1/4, even when I lived in AZ for 3 years.
I have never noticed/heard the fan before since everything has been working, but when the temp gets past 1/4 and I turn the AC on the temp gauge goes down, so there must be a fan issue.
The only 2 other things I can think of are the PCM or the fan motor itself, but it works with the AC on!
Thanks in advance for any help!
