I have a 1993 Saturn SL2 DOHC, 1.4L. We have changed everything in the fuel system area but the fuel regulator and the fuel pump. I can not start the car by just turning the key, I do hear the fuel pump in gauge when you turn the key, but it sounds like it is getting too much gas and that is what it smells like also. I have to put my foot on the gas pedal to crank the car and it spits and sputters and it will hesitate when you give it gas (almost die) and it will do the same when you put it in reverse also. The hesitation does not happen all the time, but it does happen quite frequently. My car runs really good when you are driving it for a while, but you still have to place your foot on the pedal for it to start and there is also some black smoke coming from the exhaust when it is finally cranked but it does go away.

No I have'nt checked the CTS. That would make the car not want to start? One of the mechanic's at American Tire and Service told me that it might be the fuel regulator and not the fuel pump, but I will try the sensor and let you know the outcome. We have replaced so many sensors already, but not that one(lol). Again thank you so very much for your help.

Yes it can cause a whole lot of different thing's to happen you have two sensor's it's the bottom one with two wire's going to it the one you want to change. Also inspect the connector going to it if it's corroded then you will have to replace the connector too.Make sure you get a brass tipped sensor the plastic tipped one's crack.Give it a try there only 10 and it's the most likely cause to your problem.Let me know what you find.
