2001 Saturn SL1 please help

Engine Performance problem
2001 Saturn SL1 4 cyl

Hi, I just bought a 2001 saturn (automatic)used and all seemed great. A few weeks later the check engine soon light came on. Then when I put it in park, it revved up to 2k rpm and stays there til I turn the car off, then a week later 3k rpm. It doesn't do it all the time, about twice a week or more. It also does it in neutral. And while driving it tends to speed up on it's own and I find myself riding the brake more. I'm afraid of auto repair shops cuz they see a sigle mother and try to take advantage of me. I'm preparing for a 2,000 mile trip. Can you help please?

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
If it won't make it, buy a cheap scanner, they can be had for 30-40 dollars, a good investment, since they cover all cars sold in the USA from 96 on.
If the light is blinking, it means possible damage to the converter. Service it right away!
