2001 Saturn SL1 engine knock

My daughter's 2001 saturn SL1 knocks when accelerating during warm weather, in the winter it doesn't. What could it be?

Check the EGR valve if its not opening exhaust gases will not recirculate and cause the engine to detonate/ping called spark knock-
