1996 Saturn SL1 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

my heater was working fine till just the other day. Now it only occasionally blows hot air. What could the problem be?

Check the thermostat if its stuck open and heater core if its clogged if both okay check the heater control valve if it has one if it continues could be air mix/blend/mode door problems, vacuum/actuators and the HVAC control module
