Both odometers recently stopped working. What could be the cause? My mechanic said it might be a 'cap' but before I invest in a high diagnostic fee I'd like to know more about what could cause this. Everything else about this vehicle is in excellent condition due to my strict maintenance routine.

well if u only have 38,000 miles then its worth fixing.the most common cause is the drive wheel in the odometer if u just arent registering how many miles ur going they sell the gear or u can send ur whole speedometer into them to fix it for a flat fee.my sisters odometer stopped working on her 93 the same style as urs and i took it apart and the gear was comming apart.i had a 94 saturn same thing happened on that one too.pretty common.
