1985 Saturn SL1 Engine sinsor?

Can an egr valve work somtimes and then acked up letting the engine to die at stop lights and keeps running as long as your easy on the accelerator? I changed the map sensor I took it to a shop put it on the computer they dint find a thing wrong with it doesnt make since to me my friend swares it the egr valve
