I have the same problem you have. The speedometer and odometer do not work at all and I'm also having issues with the transmission shifting wildly or sometimes sticking in one gear at high RPMs. Any ideas? Could all of these problems be related?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, my car is also a '97 SC2. And according to the guys at my local Tuffy Muffler, there were no codes on their diagnostic. Although that didn't stop them from charging me $39.99 for it anyway...
They just repaired the flex pipe on my exhaust and gave it an oil change and sent me on my way. Needless to say, there are definitely more things wrong with it than that! My 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' light has been on since I bought the car.

The codes I got were P0500 and P0722. I'd greatly appreciate any advice you could give me to repair these problems myself. Thanks!!

Those are both for the output speed sensor which is right by where your right side axle comes out.Inspect the wiring to it those sensors rarely fail. Also do you have a multi meter to do some testing?

I do indeed have a multi meter. It doesn't surprise me to hear that is most likely an electrical problem. The car sat parked out in the elements for over 2 years before I bought it. But I'm hoping with some minor repairs and a little TLC, I can get it to run properly for a few more years. It only has approximately 76k miles, which is the last reading on the odometer before it stopped working.

So how was the wiring to the sensor?

Sorry it took me so long to respond - you were right, the speed sensor itself was fine, it was simply a frayed wire. A little splicing and some electrical tape solved the problem! Thanks for your help!
