Each time I turn my A/C on, I hear a rattling noise. I took it in and the mechanic said it was ok, it was just my timing belt/chain that is rattling against something but it won't do any damage and it does not to be replace. It is embarrassing because you can hear the rattling noise, especially when at a stop. I'm not sure if I should have it replaced anyway. I have a Saturn coupe 3 door with 52,000 miles on it. Should the belt be adjusted or replaced? When I turn the A/C off, the noise stops.

If it was the timing belt it would do it all the time especially when you are accelrating. if it only happens when you turn on the a/c it could be the bearings in the a/c compressor. Have the car running without the a/c on, have someone in front of the car and have the hood open, turn on the a/c
and see if you can pinpoint the rattling.
