I have a 1995 sw2. Automatic. It runs fine in park and in nuetral but when sitting at a light or whenever it is in gear and sitting, it runs rough and sputters and almost stalls. When I put in nuetral, it instantly runs fine.

My saturn sl1 does the same exact thing. Did you ever find out what the problem was? Sue

Alright, I have seen a few of these and what you need to understand is that when you ae at a stop in a car with an automatic transmission, the engine is under load when in gear at a stop, meaning the engine is working hard. Several things can result in this. The fisrt few show up at stopping and are: fuel pump, sensor and filter. These things first start to show at a stop b/c the engine is under load and not getting any more fuel than at regulor idle. If you do not have an overall power problem start there. If the problem is from an overall loss of power than you need to make sure you keep up with you routine maintenance. Like air filter, plugs, plug wires, coils and what not. If those are not it then there is many more areas to look at like everything from your distibuter cap to your EGR valve. Do you have an overall loss of power. Start by going to any auto part store for a FREE computer scan to see if any codes pop up.

It's fine when i'm driving; I have no problems at all. It's just at a stop and when it's in gear. It acts like it's going to stall and when I put it in neutral it stops. Now at a redlight I don't keep it in first like you normally would. I put it in neutral to prevent it from stalling. Thanks

S when siting at a red light in 1st gear with clutch fully in it acts like it is about to die. Correct, yet when you take it out of gear you have no problems. Are you sure your clutch is ully engaqing? If you park on a completely flat and smooth suface like asfault and start it in 1st gear with clutch pushed in does it roll forward a bit? Any problems changing gears, especialy down shifting?
