Starting from an overnight rest in the driveway, my Saturn L200 did this: twice while braking within a few minutes, going from around 20mph to stop, I heard a scraping squealing noise that was obviously associated with the brakes.

However, this is first that I have heard it and it has not made any noise whatsoever since then despite me using the brakes in all sorts of different situations on a 25 mile commute. The actuall braking never seemed to be affected.

Brakes gone? Freak occurance?

Chances are that you simply picked up a piece flotsam. After a bit it was expelled.

If you were to hear a constant sqeaking/squeeling at low speed that ended when the brakes are applied your disc brake pads are worn down to the sensor.

I can't overstate the importance of proprely functioning brakes! Take a moment to do or have done a visual inspection with the tire removed. I take a good look every time I rotate my tires.

Good luck and let us know if it returns. :)
