I have a 96 sl2 with about 112,000 miles on it. On the highway no problem. In stop and go traffic it overheats. The temperature gauge on the dashboard only reads aout halfway when the car starts smoking.

Lets start with the overheating. Do the electric cooling fans come on when the engine gets hot? If not Check the relays and fuses. Check the temp sending unit wire. Disconnect from the sending unit and ground it out, the termp guage should go all the way to hot. If it does then the temp sending unit is bad.
