I have a 97 saturn sc with 100k miles. The battery will charge when attempting a jump, but the battery dies when I turn the key to the starting position. It is only after I remove the jumper cables and re-establish the connection that the battery starts to re-charge. But the problem continues because the battery always seems to short before starting. Any ideas on what would make it short out? Thanks!!!

I would try a new battery, or a known good one. You either have a bad battery, or if you have a short in your starting system, then the new batery will not start the car either.
If the new battery doesnt fix it, post back and I will help you with the trouble shooting.
