2002 Other Saturn Models Running Rough

My car has been running rough now for quite awhile. The service engine light has been on and been running at a high idle. If I'm stopped at a red light it will idle at 2500 rpms. I'm worried if I take it in, I'll get screwed by the mechanics. Is there a way I can pinpoint the problem?

have it scanned for codes
get codes and let me know
check for vacuum leaks and is it due for tune up ?
