I have a 1997 Saturn SL-2 and I do believe that I need a new alternator. I just replaced the water pump, idler pulley, and a new battery. When driving all power is lost and it shuts down. I can get it jumped but can not step on the brakes or it shuts down. However, if I put the car in drive before I take off the cables I can drive it. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey Jenna,
First make sure your serp belt and it's tensioner are in good shape. Is the alt light on solid?

Chances are it is bad and does need rebuilt or replaced. I can link you to specific instructions if you need them.

Good luck and let us know. :)

I just wanted to update. It was the alternator and I did get it changed out. It was quite simple, although odd that I had to go through the front right wheel well. Anyhow thank you again for the response. :D

Cool. Thanks for the update. Front wheel drive cars are like that.
