No, you do not need to remove the power steering pump for this. When I replaced the alternator on my car, I removed the serpentine belt by loosening the belt tensioner. Then jack the car up, remove the passenger's side wheel and splashguard. The alternator is mounted up by two or three bolts that need to be removed to get the alternator out of there. It's a little tightly confined, but it can be done.
I am not a mechanic by any means, but this is what I did to replace it on my 92 SL1
