There is a plug that gets pulled, when the temperature is at temp. When it is at that point you pull the plug with the motor running and if none comes out add some until it runs out.

If you don't have a leak then I wouldn't worry about checking it. It's not easy to check it has to be on level ground and you would have to put it on four jack stand's so it was level and that you could get under it to check it. You change it every 50,000 mile's. If your going to go thru all that you might as well just change it.
