Steering problem
2001 Saturn L300 Automatic

I have a 2001 Saturn L300 automatic. I am replacing the whole ignition assembly, clips, plugs and key cylinder. The bolts that connect my ignition assembly to the bottom of my steering column are round, almost like a rivet, there are no markings or groves, do I need to chisel it off and retap the bolts! I have the new part just waiting to go on. Thanks for your time.

Those are called shear bolts when they reach a certain torque the head of the bolt shears off when u put the new bolts in u will shear those heads off as well.U will need a punch with a pointed tip not too large and use that to take them off.U just dig the punch in to start it rotating then dig in again to get another bite and keep doing that untill u get it out enough to grab it with pliers just stay away from the housing with the punch. Let me know how it goes.

After you were kind enough to tell me what the dealership could not. It helped a lot. I used a small drill bit and then lightly hammered a ease out bit on the tops of the bolts, they came right out. So I have put everything back together, battery charged... And nothing! (I can hear my fuel pump kick on) I am wondering if there is something to do to tell the computer that I have a new key or some how to reprogram the car of course with out taking it to the Saturn Shop, I live far away from one now since most have shut down, and the one closest by hasn't been helpful at all. Thanks again for you time.

I was wondering how u made out on getting those bolts out glad to hear u got them out.I hear u on all the saturn dealers closing I worked for alot of them and the one I worked at closed also. Ok on ur problem with the no start its nothing to do with the new key or cyclinder the new housing u put in has a passlock sensor thats ur anti theft and why it wont start ur body control module has to learn ur new passlock. Ok heres what u have to do to learn the passlock this will require ur battery has a good charge.U have to repeat these steps 3 times if u dont complete each cycle of learning before u start the next u will have to start over. Ok turn ur key to the start postion let the starter run a couple of seconds then let it go back to the run postion where it is when u drive the car the security light will be flashing or staying on solid at this point wait atleast ten mins I recomend timming it the security lite will be off or on solid at this point depending on how it was when u cranked it over earlier. Now u can turn it off for 30 seconds and repeat the cycle a total of three times after ur third time is complete turn it off for 30 seconds then the next time u turn it over it should start then u know ur done learning it. Its not hard to learn let me know how it goes.

Oh my! I wish there was a way to thank you... Thank you so so much... You really made a not so good holiday season a lot better...I would have ended up taking my car to the Saturn dealership if this had not worked but thanks to you I have a running car... It was such a liberating thing to hear it crank up... Especially after all my husbands skeptical looks over the past few weeks while I had the steering column all tore apart...I would not have been able to do it with out you... Thanks so much for you time... I hope YOU have a wonderful holiday season... Thanks again...
