Engine Performance problem
2001 Saturn L200 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My Saturn started this problem. At freeway speeds the speedometer will fluctuate, going between the correct speed and lower. Then the transmission will shift into a lower gear and rpms go way up. If you reduce the gas it improves the problem.

Took to Advance, they said because no check engine light there would be no codes. Could it be the vehicle speed sensor?

There should be codes if ur having the problems ur having.have them read ur codes anyways u could have some in history of the computer.u could even have body codes that are giving u trouble the auto parts store can't read those unless they have a advanced expensive scanner.u could have a bad speed sensor or even a bad bcm.we need to get codes so we have some kind of starting point.let me know.

Before spending money on diagnostics I unplugged the sensor on the output side of transmission. This stopped the speedometer from working, so I replaced it ($15 part). This has fixed the problem. (working for over a week.
