2002 Saturn L100 Car will start up run for 3 seconds &

Car will start up run for 3 seconds & stops. If you turn the key but not all the way you can here the fuel pump comeon for about 3-4 second then turns off. Then if you turn the key to the start position it will start run for 3 seconds and then stop it does this every time. I was working with a guy who knows about cars IFirst he had me purchase a New Battery, then a new crank timing sensor???. The only other piece of important information I have is that the fuel gauhe does not work when you turn the key on. All the other gauges work except the gas gauge. I bought a Haynes manual, and it says it could be the Fuel pressor sensor, maybe the fuel level sensor, which I think is conected, or part of the fuel pump. Any guesses would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have to replace a $350.00 fuel pump if it could be something small or less expensive, however because the fuel gauge doesen't work I think it may be the fuel pump...
