2006 Saturn Ion stalls cold

when i first drive vehicleabout 30 mph or so and then stop at a light the car downshifts very hard and stalls out. after that it runs perfect

more than likely it sounds like a transmission problem. It could be a sticking solenoid inside the trans. Or it could be a binding torque convertor.
