I put hole in pan and ran out of oil. Engine is locked. Is it cost effective to fix or replace? Can it be fixed? Located an engine from salvage yard with 60,000 miles for $650.00. This mechanic wants $1,000.00 to put in. I want to do it myself.

Hello,

When an engine locks up due to no oil, you will have to rebuild the engine or replace it. Many times replacing is more cost affective than rebuilding as the engine rebuilding is more labor intensive.
Replacing the engine will require several hand tools.

I have attached the complete engine replacement procedure.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
