2004 Saturn Ion overheating

2004 Saturn Ion 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive 77500 miles

my ion started overheating and air conditioner stated blowing warm air as well as when cooling fans shut off car would surge. is this as simple as a sensor or could the belt be slipping?

Try replacing the thermostat and go from there.
