I have been told I have a left front axle seal problem that will cost $235 for repair. Is it dangerous to drive with this problem? How soon should I have it repaired to remain safe? What happens as a sign that it is really bad and urgent?

The axle seals prevent transmission fluid from escapeing the transmission. How soon should you get it done depends on how bad they are leaking. If it is leaking bad the transmission can get low on fluid and not shift correctly. No real safety issues related to the seal besides the transmission problem described above.
Ask them if it is seaping, or actually dripping. A little bit of dampness around the seal can be put off for a bit.
