1996 Saab 900 White smoke at start-up

Hello

We have a cloud of white smoke at start-up, engine running rough, then smoke stops and car runs (relatively) fine. I've heard head gasket, I've heard turbo, is there a way to find out?

If there is coolant loss and oil looks like a chocolate malt then head gasket. unlikely trubo
