Transmission problem
1999 Saab 9-5 4 cyl Automatic 165, miles

Hi I have jut driven my Saab estate to Tweed Heads. I went across a pretty rough road and during this time my check your gearbox light came on. The car went into limp home mode and I limped to NRMA in Tamworth. The guy was brilliant as his dad and brother have saabs. He put the diagnostic instrument? On it and the code said the speed sensor. Once he cleaned it and cleared the light I was on my way with no further problems. Yay! After a couple of days in Tweed Heads the light came on again so I took it to an auto electrician recommended by the continental cars dealership. He then kept it for 9 days! He replaced the speed sensor and then spent the rest of the time trying to work out why the light was still on! He thinks it is a loose wire somewhere. AAAAGGGHHHH! Or should I say ouch! I had to stay in a motel until on the ninth day I took the car from him and headed off back to Bathurst feeling very poor. He had managed to get it out of limp home mode at least.
The car went brillianly until just out of Mudgee when it happened again. This time the light came on but limp home mode did not activate. I took the car to both the NRMA and a local mechanic who put it on the diagnostic tool and then told me that it could not get the code because he didn't have saab on it. Ok so I decided to head for Bathurst and the light went off and stayed off all the way. There has been no problem at all in driving the car, no noises or driving issues. I am wondering if the transmission oil may be a little low? I have checked it and it is a really good colour. This has been a very frustrating, expensive and baffling problem. Anyone got any thought? We don't have a saab dealer here in Bathurst.
cheers
Steph

Hi there,

Saab's can be a bit of a mongrel dog when it come to diagnostic, unless you have a Saab friendly scanner you are wasting your time, now as you say there is no Saab dealer in Bathurst, I would check out the local transmission shop as they may have the interface needed to read the codes.
