it seems there is some pretty bad rubbing on the rotor. i have checked my caliper and it seems that it is okay and there doesnt seem to be any abnormal wear on the pads. something i was told to check was the hub bearing assembly, how would i do that? and is that even the right route to go?

You may have has a stone jambed in the caliper and it has now ground down and fallen out, this is not uncommon, best to get the brakes checked out by a trained mechanic just to make sure that there is nothing amiss.
