2000 Rover 25 sluggish car

My car has started to run sluggish. Taken it to the garage they though it might be spark plugs, lead and coils. Two of these parts have been replaced and there is no change. The guy at the garage now thinks it may have something to do with the car not sensoring that petrol is going through and that it may be a technical fault. Rather than replace the coil which would be more costly he has suggested replacing a switch. Is this likely to be the cause, bearing in mind it just keeps backfiring and doesn't pick up speed even with the foot on the gas pedal??

add a good fuel cleaner to the tank to clean injectors etc. ... replace the CKP (crankshaft position sensor) .. have the car plugged into a diagnostic computer to retrieve any fault codes stored and repost with full fault codes for more assistance

the guy at the garage has now had a diagnostic test done on it and replaced to leads on the lambda sensor. he took it for a spin and although it isnt as bad it still hasnt cured it and began to labour a bit so pulled in to the side but then seemed to run ok??? any more suggestions as it doesnt run smoothly all the time.

clean/replace the MAF (mass airflow) sensor and have the mechanic check the TPS (throttle position) sensor is good
