Rough starting for sev months, then 'check engine' light came on.

The repair shop said the the IMRC motor was stuck open due to carbon buidup. Charged me $50 for diagnostic and $90 for the cleaning. So, what is this IMRC - what does it do?

intake manifold rudder control. there is a throttle valve inside the intake that directs air to the cylinder and is controlled by the pcm. when it is carboned up it will stick open or closed effecting performance of the engine.

Ford has used it since the late 90's.
