Rough idling and hesitation

My car has no problem starting but when running in park or in gear it shakes really bad and almost shuts off. There is a really bad gas smell when in park and a very heavy When in park sometimes idles really high for about 10 minutes.

I would start with a compression test to be sure all the cylinders are good.

From your description, it sounds like you have more than one cylinder not firing.
